From 1988 – 1989 I was Hasker Senior Scholar at Exeter College, Oxford, and also Lecturer in Classics at Balliol College, Oxford. From 1989 – 1992 I held the Esmee Fairbairn Junior Research Fellowship at New College, Oxford, and completed a BA in Theology as a member of that college in 1990. From 1992 to 1993 I remained at New College as a British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellow.

In 1993 I was elected as the Official Student (i.e. Tutorial Fellow) in Theology at Christ Church, Oxford, and University Lecturer in Patristics in the Faculty of Theology at the University of Oxford. My University title is now Associate Professor in Patristics in the Faculty of Theology and Religion; since 2014 I have also held a personal chair as Professor of Early Christian Studies.
